Tinnitus Set off by Reading the Newspaper

Reading the newspaper never fails to set off my tinnitus.

Today it happened twice—and I spent a mere 15 minutes with the paper.

The first was Miss Manners (Judith Martin) who gave an excellent response to a bride-to-be who doesn’t want children at her wedding. Miss Martin’s answer was so good that I think I should have anticipated her solution. My left ear started ringing like the emergency this-is-only-a-test siren. Let’s face it. I’m jealous.

The next one was not so self-centered. I read that China is poised to wear the greenhouse gas emission crown, now worn by the U.S. The article says that the Chinese don’t have the technology for smoke stack scrubbers. As I read I thought: We’re doomed and there’s nothing I can do about it. My left ear again began to ring again, just like it did over Miss Manners.

In both of these cases, I was able to recognize the silliness of my reaction and turn off the tinnitus. Whew!
