Cognition, Emotion, and Stress

Flow: The Psychology of Optimal Experience by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi. I liked this book so much that I bought ten and gave them to my friends. It changed my life by pointing out that negative thoughts were both normal and unnecessary. (For me, negative thoughts restult in ringing in my ears.) This is a seminal work in the study of happiness and is used at the college level as a supplementary text.

A must read for anyone needing to forgive herself, My Life so Far is Jane Fonda’s exploration of her life path, a thought-provoking book in which she struggles to understand her choices, from Barbarella to Hanoi Jane to Ted Turner. A champion of girl power, Fonda writes from the perspective of a woman, herself, who’s battled a poor body image with anorexia/bulimia and breast implants.

My Life so Far, read by the author and offered as an audio CD, is excellent. Fonda’s own voice enhances the poignancy of her message.

The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle is a book consequential to my own struggle to order my mind. Tolle trains you to stop thinking unnecessarily and start enjoying everything, even situations that are, by anyone’s perspective, displeasing.

I really enjoy listening to Tolle lecture, so I recommend the Eckhart Tolle Audio Collection. When Tolle speaks, he exudes happiness.

The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success by Deepak Chopra tells you how to fulfill your desires, whether they be for world peace or a new Lexus. Compared to other books in Chopra’s impressive lineup, this offering is mercifully short and to the point. It’s a good guide for getting your life on track.

Herbal Cures

The Chopra Center Herbal Handbook presents a wealth of information on various herbs, including Ginkgo Biloba, which many believe to be beneficial for tinnitus (ringing in the ears).

In Restful Sleep Deepak Chopra proffers helpful hints about sleeping well. The most important for me was the concept of being happy with your life—if you’re not satisfied with your life path, it’s hard to relax and fall asleep. The same thoughts and feelings that keep me from sleeping cause ringing in my ears.

TMD (TMJ Disorder)

Taking control of TMJ by Robert Uppgaard gets Amazon’s highest reader rating. Many people have suboptimal jaw joints and many of those have tinnitus (ringing in the ears). Half of those successfully treated for TMD (TMJ Disorder) are cured of their tinnitus. This could be you!
